The Two Gentlemen of Verona
William Shakespeare
Sinopsis
If Shakespeare is one of the builders of the modern human soul, as Harold Bloom argues, in The Two Gentlemen of Verona he will begin to develop many of the elements that will define this conception of the human being.
The Two Gentlemen of Verona is one of the first comedies in which he refines the tensions between friendship and love, tensions that occupied no small space in the literature of the late Renaissance.
Friendship understood as a sexless form of love was being treated from many perspectives and extolled as a form of high sentimental commitment as opposed to amorous relationships.
Written shortly before Romeo and Juliet, it shares many points of view and dramatic tension with this previous play.
It is also one of the most emblematic creations of the character of the comic servant, who will generate a model that will later nourish both the Bard’s theatre and that of his followers.
