Quiet life
Sweden, 2018. An inexplicable syndrome afflicts children in a country used to perfection and order. Sergei and Natalia, newly arrived with their two daughters, hope to obtain political asylum. They work hard, learn the language and undergo regular inspections. But when their application is rejected, the youngest daughter slips into a coma, joining the dreaded list. How far will they go to stay awake in a world designed to numb them?
About the film:
Inspired by true events reported in major media outlets such as the BBC and The New Yorker, Greek director Alexandros Avranas tackles for the first time in fiction Child Resignation Syndrome, a phenomenon that continues to baffle science. What drives children into comas when their families face denial of political asylum? Why do some recover quickly and others take years to wake up?
A triple award-winner at Venice for Miss Violence, Avranas creates a dystopian, Kafkaesque universe, with production design by Markku Pätilä (Aki Kaurismäki). Starring Chulpan Khamatova, Grigory Dobrygin, Naomi Lamp, Miroslava Pashutina and Eleni Roussinou, the film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival (Orizzonti Section) and competed in the Official Selection at the Seville Film Festival and in Direccions at the D'A Film Festival.
